Strange as it seems I found Phuket more intimidating that Pattaya, more hassle from LB's and hawkers. Fair enough I lived in Pratumnak just on the southern edge of the centre, and the beach at the end of soi 5 near me was cleaner than central Pattaya. Nightlife better as well, again stayed drinking further back from Walking Street, but for me Phuket apart from Patong offered nothing. As far as weather goes, my opinion is that the weather is more predictable in the Pattaya area than Phuket. This doesn't mean that Phuket is a washout during the rainy season but I think the rain doesn't last as long in Pattaya compared to Phuket. But the beach is much better at Phuket if actually swimming at a beach is necessary compared to a hotel pool.

Only baht or less for the bus ride to Pattaya from Bangkok. You can visit both places. Since the hotels and local transportation is cheaper in Pattaya you could try that city first and then go to Phuket and spend more money just getting there!
